At Brookhaven Country Preschool, our Nursery Program provides a warm, nurturing environment where children learn through play, active exploration, creativity and their own interests. With thoughtfully planned activities and engaging experiences guided by our dedicated teachers, children continue to develop essential cognitive, social, emotional, language and motor skills, all while having fun.
Our classroom blends play-based learning with the gentle structure needed to move confidently through a school day. A key focus in the nursery class is promoting independence. Children are encouraged to make their own choices and follow through with them, unpack and pack up their belongings and communicate their needs and wants - helping them grow into confident, curious learners.
Each day begins with circle time, where children participate in welcome songs, movement, calendar activities and weather discussions. This familiar routine sets a positive tone for the day, leading into a balance of whole-group and small-group activities. While no two days are exactly the same, the children are consistently inspired to explore, ask questions and engage deeply with the world around them.
Throughout the day, children participate in a wide range of activities that support all areas of development, including:

Fine Motor Skills - cutting, coloring, play dough, participating in sensory play, manipulative play, etc.

Early Math Concepts - shapes, numbers, counting, patterning, and measuring

Early Literacy Skills - name and letter recognition, storytelling and pre-writing (when ready)

Literacy Enrichment - listening to and reading books as a class and in small groups

Science Exploration - hands-on experiments with real life materials

Music and Movement - group songs, dance and ample outdoor time

Imaginative Play - dramatic play, creative arts, and open-ended materials
Social development is an essential part of our nursery program. As children move beyond parallel play, they begin to engage in more imaginative and interactive play with their peers. Our teachers serve as gentle guides in helping them navigate these new social experiences, fostering cooperation, empathy and communication skills. We recognize that these early interactions build the foundation for healthy, lifelong social development.
